Sexton forum highlights   Add Comment Mar 14th, 2008 at 02:28am
I once moderated a Sexton forum where our only contact with actual engineers was when some came over to ask us to turn down the volume, because they could hear us on their side of the lounge. Attendance was much better this time. I think that is a testament to the increased attention DSU is giving Sexton, and the work of fine people over the past few years, like Scott Wetton and his predecessors.

Again, thanks to the kind people who sent me their observations. Here's what went down.

Nerogorski and Hillman were both absent (Hillman had academic commitments, not sure on Debo). Kris was late due to an exam, but did show up.

Presidential candidates were asked about DSU Services on Sexton. Gault mentioned the T-Room; Larkin mentioned T-Room, Health Plan office, SAS. Gault then mentioned SAS.

Then they were asked about their role in the executive. Gault mentioned leadership and supporting VPs, helping with communication, and being approachable and visible. Larkin mentioned being a resource for VPs and getting them to work together despite conflicts. She made particular mention of presidents supporting their VPs instead of pushing their own pet projects.

VPSL: Krista got caught offguard with a question about the Sexton Entertainment Committee. Kris, of course, knows all about it, having been busted for pre-campaigning to said committee already.

Kris demonstrated a worrying pattern. He would speak, Krista would address a shortcoming in what he had said, and he would respond to "clarify" what he had said to fix the shortcoming. I'm not sure if it is because Kris is communicating poorly or Krista is putting words into his mouth, or both. Krista's pattern is constantly saying "ummmmmmmm". (One tipster put it more succinctly: 'Kris Osmond starts every debate answer with "I want to clarify that I didn't say..." making the implication that Krista puts words in his mouth. Not true. Krista can't even put words in her own mouth (other then "Um...").')

For example, when asked how they would improve Sexton turnout, Kris wanted to use existing student groups. Krista didn't want to 'use' them, but rather to pass on her passion and excitement and that societies would be more likely to do the promotion. Kris clarified he didn't want to 'use' societies, and that he had excitement and passion too.

When asked how to get sexton entertainment directors, Krista suggested better advertisement and pushing it in residences. Kris suggested people already involved with demonstrated records. Krista responded that they shouldn't discount those who are uninvolved. Kris "clarified" he didn't mean to look at those people exclusively.

VAJ seemed a bit sensitive still. The CRO said "We're going to start with Victoria on this one", and VAJ shot back with "Actually, I went first on the last one." The CRO, showing patience beyond her years, responded by saying "We're going to start with Victoria on this one."

Boyle slipped up, thinking that the VP (Internal) chairs the Sexton Entertainment Committee (it is chaired by the VP SL, VP I doesn't even sit on it).

Senate candidates were asked about their roles on Council. Christofi wants to hold the exec accountable; sounds like he wants to be on Exec Review. RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN, CHRISTOFI. Fraser talked about leadership and communication. Hughes talked about - surprise! - hockey. As a referee, he gets to deal with emotional people. Sadly, John, outburts aren't (weren't) common during Council meetings, though if you want to give VAJ a game misconduct, I'll provide the whistle. Mason and Snow described their current council involvement. Snow mentioned that he is very outspoken at Council even when not a councillor ("that's for damn sure", remarked a pundit). He encouraged better assistance for new councillors.

Coffin again impressed people with his knowledge and preparation for a race in which he has no competition.

I do not see why it is seen as so important to know what committee is chaired by who and who scratches who's back!!
Where was I? Catching up on sleep. I have had 3 hours a night since Sunday, and I haven't been drinking.
The Canadian government operates quite well, at times, with Ministers that often have no experience in their said portfolio.
That is what full time staff is for. Get the whip out and get those middle aged dogf***ers to start doing their job, or replace them.
And why isn't anyone talking about the Dawgfather being given a spot, or Sudexho's contract coming up.
Both are a great opportunity for the union to take back some the economic surplus lost on food.
I have talked to the Dawgfather and he says he's ready to make a deal.
And I am sick of paying $7 for a turkey club with fries that really isn't that good. I have heard similar complaints from my colleagues.

Actually, it was VAJ who slipped up on the Sexton Campus Student Advisory Committee position role of the VPI. VAJ thought that they were "Deputy Chair". Boyle corrected her, rightly stating that VPI was "Chair." He later went on to answer a question about disconnect with likes of the Architecture school and struggling Sexton societies by making reference to their representation on the Sexton Campus Student Advisory Committee. The only reference he made to Sexton Campus Entertainment Committee was to mention the role of the Sexton Campus Entertainment Director on the Sexton Campus Student Advisory Committee.

Again I'd like to add a number to this:
"the union to take back some the economic surplus lost on food."
Our food service contract puts over $100k into the union to provide services for students.

I'm not going to dignify your comment about the DSU's dedicated full time staff.

Get off your pompous high horse.
They are part of the problem.

FOOD- if the Union is making $100k a year, how much do you think Sudexho is making. It is basic ecnomomics. Why not inject that surplus back into the union in 2-3 years when the contract is up.
Silly critic.

Greg,

I hate to tell you this, but it is the full-time staff who actually make the DSU run day-to-day, not student council. Out of curiosity, what exactly do you see as the specific problems of the current full-time staff?

In terms of Sodexho, sure, I dislike them as much as many students do, I'm sure. However, what is the alternative? What food service can provide services that cater to external buildings? What alternative food service could produce a full buffet dinner for 400 people in the McInnis room?
