A fair bit of elections news today, I'll cover it all by the time I'm done. But first: BREAKING NEWS: Attendance at the forum in Tupper Link was very poor.
This entirely unanticipated plunge in attendance threw organizers and candidates into shock. "Where are the hordes of people?" asked one candidate, who declined to be named. "Last year, we didn't have enough chairs. This year, people are walking outside just to avoid us. I feel like a CS student at the Palace." Yeah, not a whole lot of people showed up. In fact, some candidates didn't even make it - Debogorskexpialidocious, Mason and Hughes didn't show. Debo I understand - he knows his votes will come from people who won't be at forums. Mason and Hughes, though, still have room to persuade those involved with the DSU to vote for them. Eric Snow is a shoo-in with the DSU faithful, but they get to pick two other candidates. The faithful may not have attended the debate, but word does get back to them.
The forum was, frankly, more of the same. Courtney and Tara vied for the win again, hard to pick a winner. Daniel for VPI. Kris and Krista... call it a tie, I have one vote for Kris and one for Krista. We'll give Senate to ... Kaylyn, just to mix it up a bit; she performed well, as did Eric Snow. They may talk about things on their blogs again. Comments:

As a former Carleton Campus student I know that we always felt quite left out of all activities that we view as "studley" oriented. Even this year I think the DSU has done a really great job of reaching out to Sexton campus, but Carleton is still a little lost.
I know that it is hard to reach out to all students. Especially since a lot of Carleton students are professional students and are in serious programs... so the form may not be their highest priority.

Also, I would like Debo to stop insulting my boyfriend. I have a hard time believe his claim that "The first two weeks would be spent exhaustively prying Mike Tipping’s brain for every piece of tacit knowledge and advice he could give. He likely will not be of much help based on our past experiences."

A CS student at the Palace? Ouch. As a CS student, I'm hurt. Deeply. Really. And it only happened that one time, okay?
Maggie - Try telling an engineer or CS student their program isn't "serious" and see what kind of response you get. I know (or hope, at least) that isn't what you meant, but that was poorly phrased. That said, I do agree that Carleton Campus is almost completely ignored by the student union, and that needs to change.

Oh I am sorry, I did not mean that other programs aren't serious. I know that they are. I know that there is no way I would have been able to make it through a program like computer science, I am not nearly smart enough.
What I meant is that I really noticed a shift in campus attitude when I moved down to Carleton campus, there are a lot of older students, and a lot of people paying over $10,000 a year in tuition down there.
I completely respect though that there are lots of hard working students on all campuses - I just sometimes found Carleton campus students a little more wrapped up in their programs. Might just be personality types of health care professionals.
Also I must admit that I only spent my first year on studley campus, and I am sure that biased my perspective. I might be totally wrong about all of this.

I hope I didn't just dig myself into a deeper hole there. I really didn't mean to offend anyone.

Just for the record, I find Greg hilarious. I used that quote at the top of my council report this week.

I guess I might as well flush my Studley based degree since obviously it's not serious...

Don't feel too bad, everyone knows that the only worthwhile degrees granted in Halifax come from King's.

Unfortunately my lack of a trust fund prevented me from joining the ranks of the hippies that have amassed on that little corner of Dal's campus.

I understand where you're coming from... when you don't have money you want to wear GAP, study political science and shower. When you have money suddenly it is cool to wear Salvation Army cast-offs, study the metaphysical nature of Kantian beer and smell funny.
I've come to grips with this reality, however. Out with the drugs, in with the hugs and all that...

If Dalhousie was America then Kings would be our Mexico... I mean, we're annoyed that people are crossing the quad and editing our campus paper using our student fees; but at the same time it's not like any of us want the job. It's like picking avacados. Or cotton. I advocate a guest-worker program.
Vote western-ish observer for president of AmeriDal!
Red-Blooded, Flag-Waving, America-Loving Patriot says:

No, Mexicans actually work. King's is more like a Canada or France: a bunch of elitist, holier-than-thou whiners who never really seem accomplish anything.
Also, they speak French. Screw that.
western-ish observer says:
[Mar 12th @ 11:41pm]
I suppose you're right. I mean, if Dalhousie was America the Sexton Campus would be Maine and that would please no one. Especially Mainers.
Gregory Debogorski says:
[Mar 13th @ 04:43pm]
Dalhousie is not America!
I resent the notion of it. Oh, Canada! Our home and native land...the NORTH, STRONG, AND FREE!!!
We need more people on this earth that have the outlook of most King's students towards politics. If they choose for a lighter academic load so be it. This does not make them lesser academics as long as they spend extra time pursuing reading, arts, or science. I know a few that do.
Kings Wannabe says:
[Mar 13th @ 04:48pm]
So you're saying that Dal students should be more like Kings students? That will go over great with the voters...in the KSU elections.
Gregory Debogorski says:
[Mar 13th @ 04:52pm]
I said nothing of the sort. I am saying that King's students have their place and purpose; we have our place and purpose.

I appreciate Kings students every time I go to McDonalds and see them in their place.
Gregory Debogorski says:

It is exactly that elitist attitude I hate!
Mike Tipping- I am glad that you find my funny.
Mr Riley does not feel the same way about you.
If I were you, I would try and mediate an understanding with him before your next encounter. He feels very wrong done by you.
But what do I know. I am just a lunatic right.

That's cool, I hate dimestore philosophers. King's isn't something we should be emulating.
western-ish observer says:

You resent the comparison? Really? Well I resent the implication that America is the Evil Empire and that nothing good and pure can be compared to it - even in jest. Some of us are *gasp* from America. In fact, more than 100 students at Dalhousie are from America and even more are dual citizens or have familial ties to the country. It is statements like yours, Debodouche Bag, that make some of them regret coming here to experience the Canadian hospitality that is trumpeted around the globe.
The DSU is inclusive, not exclusive, and if a presidential candidate is willing to take this kind of stance against one of the largest minority populations at Dalhousie I can only imagine how he feels about other nations. I move for an international student boycott of Debogonzo. That, or his deportation to an ice flow. Take your pick.

Oh, don't get me wrong, *I* like it. I'm a masochist like that. Nothing gets me hotter than people hating on me because of my unfortunate citizenship. I was told that it was perfectly okay to hate on Debotulism though and was just exercising that right. The rest of you should feel free to continue with whatever.
