Maelstrom 08: video profiles   Add Comment Mar 12th, 2008 at 01:07am
Sorry for a day without posts - my job in real life took all of today's time; by the time I was done, it was past midnight on the east coast. There are more to come tonight, but for now, the transcripts of video bios are up for the exec positions.

I have a few thoughts on what the presidential candidates had to say.

Courtney Larkin

Hi Tigers

I spent 7 years at Dal, 6 of them with the DSU, earned two degrees and a barrel of awards, and I've never once thought of myself as a "Tiger". Perhaps because it always made me think of frosted flakes.

passion and dedication to be a strong leader

If that's all it takes to be a strong leader, Stalin was a strong leader. Don't get me wrong, I like the sentiment - when you start your purges, I have a list.

have been able to exceed all expectations

... you should *really* clarify whether or not everyone had really low expectations.

Through the management skills and leadership roles, through being a vice-president...

Did I transcribe that wrong, or is it just a really awkward sentence?

John Hillman

(Standing in front of a pink curtain...

First of all, it looks like you are in a bordello.

Uh, running out of time,...

Whoa, whoa - you made one point, and then ran out of time?

the student union needs your participation.

If that's true, the student union is totally sunk.

Tara Gault

The DSU is more than a building.

The DSU is, in fact, not a building at all!

The DSU is a way for students of all backgrounds, experiences, and interests to come together... Together we can rejuvenate ... Together we can make the DSU more approachable ...

I feel that "We are the world" is the ideal soundtrack for this speech. "There comes a time ... when the world must come together as one". I mean, it sounds nice, but in reality, how much of your term is going to be you doing your thing, and us doing our thing, and then in a year someone coming and promising to do it better?

Gregory Debogorski

(Standing in the management building and above the noise in the Atrium.)

There is something that amuses me about promising to get up close and personal with all 15,000 students once elected, yet standing half a mile away on the other side of a multi-story drop for the video bio.

program review, uh, some external auditing, ... bring the students back into the Union.

Because nothing brings students running like program reviews and audits. Toss in calculus textbooks and you'll be the most popular president since Reagan!

I think we need to take another look at our constitution...

Ah, there you go, *that* is what was missing in the plan to bring students back to the Union.

What more timely a place could there be for a budding politician to announce his candidacy than a bordello?

I wonder if Clinton will still want my support?

Larkin: Buzz words! I am a managment student! (Ask orientation people; Larkin has her (significant) Stalin impulses. Think centralizing control, paranoia)

Hillman: uhhh I (heart) kings, play DSU

Gault: I wish I could channel Obama, go hope, ideas, puppy dogs, and hugs!ANSSA CASA HSA! Mediocre is nifty!

Debo: Someday I will be that guy with the gun. Standing right here...

Bill, yes; Hillary, maybe.

My problem with most DSU candidates every year is the avoidance of talking about "real" issues in their campaign.
Ok critics here is your opening!
It seems like all of them memorize all the silly committees and boards, while keeping a constant I am this...I am that...campaign that really doesn't reflect what concerns students.
Elections at an academic institution should avoid this at all costs in my mind. This image management and marketing gets carried out into the real world and completely screws up Canadian politics. Politicians get so caught up in politicking, they forget the real reason of why they were elected in the first place- to do work for the good of the public.

with all due respect Greg you have hated all DSU candidates this year and last year without really knowing anything about them. You talk about levies and the pitfalls of them, but seem to have zero understanding of the programs they support, the reasons they are there, and the fact that students voted them in.

I am not saying that the DSU is perfect, but without having ever made one effort to go talk to the DSU (yes, I know you have gone to yell and belittle), how do you expect to really know what is going on?

I would have a lot more respect for your hatred of the DSU if I felt that you had one sweet clue what was going on.

Here's my guess for where John Hillman is in his video: 2nd floor grad house? The walls are red, and if the light hits them right, could look pink? The better question is, why have I been up nights thinking this?
John Hillman says:
[Mar 12th @ 10:25am]

I debated posting this, as I don't want to be responsible for you losing any more sleep Jen, but it's not actually the Grad House. The light theory is a good start though...

Anyone else have a guess, or are we just going to stick with bordello?

As a law student (Jen, you'll probably be with me on this one), my favourite part of Debogorski's video is when he suggests that the DSU Constitution be reviewed by law students. I guess someone who actually has completed their LLB, practiced law, and is ethically and legally allowed to give legal advice (unlike a student) isn't good enough.

My theory on the Hillman location is somewhere in the McInnes room - I think the pinkish background is a curtain of some sort. Perhaps he's backstage?

I also love the awkward video freezes. genius.
Anonymous DSUer says:

Hillman's in the McInnes room, in front of one of the curtains on the back or the far side of the room.
DSU Worker Monkey says:

Show me: McInnis Room!

*ding ding ding ding*
John Hillman says:
[Mar 12th @ 02:15pm]

Correct!

That was over disappointingly quickly. If I ever run again I will have to pick somewhere exotic...like the Tupper building.
Gregory Debogorski says:
[Mar 12th @ 03:21pm]

As a matter of fact I attended almost every DSU council meeting last semester learning about the DSU. In those three months, the DSU could not get its stuff together. Hanlon tryed hard; Eric and Chris K tryed hard.
Others seriously failed.
I think you said something to the effect of -Know a little about the object you criticism.
So now I am sending it back to you Brother.
Lets stop attacking each other already and flippin' fix the damn Union!
Gregory Debogorski says:
[Mar 12th @ 03:25pm]

We have the expertise here to draft a constitution that is is teh best in teh world! Why not do it?
anon says:
[Mar 12th @ 03:25pm]

I know for a fact that you did not attend almost every meeting.
Gregory Debogorski says:
[Mar 12th @ 04:59pm]

I have thought this one over and I think you are right. I made a false claim. I think I missed about one quarter or a third.
I still made an effort of involvement, and am still part of a distinct minority of students who even attend council meetings.
I showed at Imagine and I showed at the AGM.
My apologies for the slip of the key board.
