candidate round-up
|
Mar 9th, 2008 at 09:53pm |
Campaigning for the DSU Elections starts Monday (tomorrow) at 8am. I see the candidate profiles and pictures have been posted.
I've spent a little time talking about the presidential candidates, mostly because I'm giddy with anticipation for the impending maelstrom. There are, however, other positions available:
Vice President (Internal)
Victoria Jones
Jones had a successful run at a Senate seat last year; you may recall her clever "VOTE VAJ" t-shirts. The online portion of her campaign was entirely unmemorable.
Daniel Boyle
After a close loss in the Board of Governors race last year, Boyle took a seat on the Board of Operations of the DSU. Now he's back. I... got nothing. Someone tell me something interesting.
Vice President (Education)
Mark Coffin
Mark is part of SustainDal, appears to be active with the Green Party, and .adsgf8-3129fj12c,fadfagajasgg
Whoa, sorry, dozed off there. Yeah... *boring*. One candidate? No one loses Yes-No votes. If he has unique ideas, I'll listen, but I read his profile and it's all ideals with no ideas. Step it up.
Vice President (Student Life)
Kris Osmond
Krista Ali
Never heard of 'em. Rumour is they are both SUB infodesk staffers, so there is potential here for an interesting campaign.
Undergraduate Senate Representative
Kaylyn Fraser
Blair Mason
Jonathan Hughes
Who?
Andrew Christofi
I only know the name from his role on the Society Policy Committee; given the recently-raised furor about some of that committee's recommendations, he may face a few interesting questions at the forums.
Eric Snow
Eric ran a very visible campaign for Senate last year and missed the seat by a handful of votes. By all reports he's been active with the DSU ever since, so we'll see what he's got this year.
Board of Governors
All of the elected BoG representatives have elected to serve their full 2-year terms, so there will be no elections for this position.
News? Ideas? Let me know at the tip line. Comments:

I feel your disconnect from the candidates. If I wasn't an alum and was actually eligible to vote in these elections I'd likely mark the box next to the name of the most attractive candidate. That is, I'd spoil every ballot.

Yeah... it's strange to not know the candidates.
In some ways, I feel bad about trying to discuss elections without being there in person.
On the other hand, I see exactly what 95% of the electorate sees, so I find this perspective to be very interesting.

The DSU does not possess unity; the DSU is not a real union.
The only thing that keeps it together is teh fees levied on the students. If the fees were optional the DSU would crumble on the 30-40% decrease in funding.

Hey Mike,
you did not cover all the positions. You've skip one: the Graduate Student Representative. I was expecting some great sarcastic comment but I've been ignored.
I think I'll restate what I stated last year. None of the executive candidates are talking about graduate students in their platform. The presidential and VP (Education) should at least mention that group.
