Shad Valley, Day 6
|
Jul 10th, 2005 at 01:51am |
If you've never gotten up at 6:30am to take 52 students from Toronto on a 17km hike through the brush, you have no idea what my day was like today. Ok, so they aren't all from Toronto, and the path is well-defined in most areas, but that is still a very long walk. We hiked Cape Split - 8k in and 9k out, because we take a detour to go to the "beach".
To get down to the beach, one makes their way down an eroded face with a rope for support and tries not to slip on mud, loose rocks, and whatnot. My job is to hold this rope so as to ballast the weight of 2 or 3 at a time, for all 52. This was a gruelling and time consuming process, but we wanted to avoid injuries.
After this hike, we head back out of the Cape and to another nearby beach for a barbeque and games on the beach and whatnot. 2 hours back to Halifax, and we arrive late at night and exhausted... in time for movie night.
Long story short - I'm pretty sore all over after what I would characterize as a 'gruelling' day. Tomorrow, finally - relaxation, for a while at least. And sleeping in! No more 7am mornings for me. Comments:

I hiked Cape Blomidon today...we debated going to Cape Split, but decided that we didn't sufficient time. Walking a few kms through the woods with barefeet is an adventure in itself....fortunately ours ended up with a dip in the Atlantic Ocean...and we tasted like dropjes afterwards. mmm. Here's to hiking...yikes.
