Shad Valley, Day 4   Add Comment Jul 7th, 2005 at 08:41pm
Today marked my first lecture to the whole group. I spoke about the technology of the future, holding an interactive session where we talked about what was to come, and what was stopping us from getting there. I also talked about new and unique challenges that had to be overcome - privacy, security, reliability. I showed clips from Minority Report to make my point, and then got some of them to draw from those clips. I found it very interesting - hopefully they did, too. I can tell you that Minority Report went from "Not on the list" to second place selection for Movie night :)

I was followed by Dr. Stephen Cheung, who runs the Environmental Ergonomics Lab here at Dal. He spoke about offshore survival (effects of cold) and heat stress - the challenges and problems left to be solved.

Our final speaker tonight was an interactive video conference with Erik Peterson, who is among other things the Director, Global Strategy Institute at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. He talked about Seven Revolutions - the major forces that will be shaping our world 20 or 50 years from today. A very interesting and educational presentation.

Tonight was also the first Shadspeak. For this event, each student is given 3.5 minutes to talk about something they are passionate about. We learned about a variety of things, from Polish dancing to sign language.
