Apathy 2007: Candidate Video Bio Transcripts
These are transcripts of video bios posted on YouTube.
Note that the audio quality is pretty poor on some videos, so these may not be 100% accurate. (?) means a word I am not 100% sure about, and (???) means I am missing one or more words here because they are completely inaudible. Actions are indicated in parentheses, e.g. (rolling around laughing at some of these videos).
Jason Pelley (President)
(Standing in a hallway?)
Hi there, my name's Jason Pelley and I'm running for Dalhousie Student Union President. During my time here at Dalhousie, I've worked tirelessly on behalf of students to change the nature and processes of both the Union and the University. Among my successes, I was the founder of the Dalhousie Integrated(?) Sustainability Initiative. I lobbied successfully to have ???? paper available to professors. I worked hard at the Dalhousie Women's Center and have even implemented and facillitate(?) curriculum. Within the large(?) community with which I share a co-... strong connections I have helped... I have been a leader in micro-credit, green building and green roofs, and even run nation-wide fundraisers and events. I have made real change in this university by working parallel to the system. Now imagine what I can do within it, representing your interests as Dalhousie President. Check out jasonpelley.com and vote Jason Pelley for President of the DSU. Thank you.
Mike Tipping (President)
(Sitting inside)
Hi my name's Mike, and I'm VP Education of the DSU. I'm running for president because we've accomplished a lot this year. The government is lowering tuition by fifteen hundred dollars, we've made the Grawood a successful bar, and we've made the DSU more accountable and more democratic, but there's a lot more to do. We need to focus on getting targetted money for students that need help the most, and we need to make sure the DSU includes everyone, and that includes residence students, and people from Carlton and Sexton campuses as well. On my website you can see clips from students all over Dalhousie talking about what I've done and what we need to do together to make the DSU better. You can check that out at votemike.ca.
Jenny Cooper (VP Internal)
(Walking in front of the FASS during the entire video)
Hi everyone, my name is Jenny Cooper and I am running for your 2007 DSU VP Internal. I have some pretty exciting ideas that I hope will change this campus for the better, such as making our student union the most wired in North America. And by doing that we could ratify societies online, which already can be done, apply for grants, and many other exciting things. Another thing I'd like to happen is increase the wireless signal on campus. The Weldon Law Building, the Killam Library, and the majority of buildings on campus receive a weak signal at best and that's not cool if you're doing a research assignment, doing an exam on WebCT, orrr... looking for that cute guy in your calculus class on Facebook (hey Brian). Another issue I'd like to address is the Sodex'ho contract. It expires in 2009, and it's high time we get some better food in the Student Union Building, such as Quiznos, Subway, or Booster Juice, which offer, uh, delicious food at competitive prices. So please vote for me, Jenny Cooper, as your DSU VP Internal, when the vote... when the voting ballot rolls around. Thank you Dalhousie.
Rosalie Hanlon (VP Internal)
(Standing inside, second floor SUB)
Hi, I'm Rosalie and I'm running for VP Internal. I am running because I have seen so much energy and lots of really great initiatives at every level of the DSU. And I am excited to build on this to reach the full potential of every(?) society here at Dal. I have the experience, the vision, the passion, and the results. For details, check out rosaliehanlon.ca.
Tara Gault (VP Education)
(Standing inside with a Tim Hortons Cup)
Hi, I'm Tara Gault and I'm running for VP Education of the DSU in order to improve (???) for students, enchance school spirit, and provide students with worthwhile opportunities. I love Dalhousie and I believe it can be an even better place with an open-door policy that addresses the individual education concerns of every student. I wanna thank everyone that has taken the time to find out about the candidates. Please join my Facebook group, Tara for VP Education, to find out more about me. Thanks so much.
Amanda Myers (VP Education)
(Standing in front of blue background)
Hello, my name is Amanda Myers, I'm a fourth year student currently pursuing a degree in computer science and psychology, with a minor in business. I'm running for VP Education. We all pay a premium for a Dalhousie education, and we know it's one of the very best. The ongoing battle for lower tuition rates is one ??? fight every day. And ensuring the money we have already spent goes to providing quality education we deserve... is also a top priority.
My focus as VP Education will be exactly that - making sure your Dalhousie education is worth every bit that you have invested.
Andrew Cook (VP Student Life)
(standing in front of the FASS)
Hey everyone. Andrew Cook. VP Student Life. Yeah, that has a good ring to it. But you have to get out and vote... vote for me to make it a reality (car passes). Why should you vote for me? Because I will work until I bleed black and gold. To me, this just isn't a position. It's an institutuion, and I believe I can make it so much better for all other Dal students. So I don't want you to worry, because worrying is like a rocking chair - it gives you something to do, but it won't get you anywhere - write that down. So get out and vote Andrew Cook, your quarterback for the DSU. (receives a passsed football) (drops the ball).
McCollins Jones (VP Student Life)
(Sitting in a chair)
Hi, my name is McCollins Jones, and I'll be running in for the Vice President Student Life of the upcoming DSU Elections. I have a wealth of experience in mobilizing, and also organizing programs most specially for students. Um, I'm willing and able to just pass on this - my knowledge if you guys can just give me the chance and just cast your vote in for me. However, I have been a national athlete in my country I won gold medal. So this is one way I can show you I have the enthusiasm, and the zeal, and energy, to work(?). Because this particular position enters, um, more or less the, the lives and activities of students and I have been in Dalhousie for my second year now and I know some of the issues that students face and I'm ready to rectify that. Thank you, and I hope you vote for me.
Courtney Larkin (VP Student Life)
(Standing outside)
The years we spend in University will give us some of the best memories of our lives (crow caws loudly). Your vote for me will get you those memories. I plan on kickstarting this with the best Frosh Week to date and also continuing the success in the Grawood and the T-Room. Throughout the last three years, I have been the president of the Dalhousie Science Society, the vice-chair of Frosh Week, and also the commissioner for the Vice President Student Life. These experiences have given me all the skills I will need to make your memories come true. So, on March 20th, 21st, and 22nd, vote Courtney Larkin for Vice-President Student Life.
Robert Panahi (VP Student Life)
(Standing in the Grawood, reading a speech from a gigantic binder while darting quick glances at the camera)
Hi everyone, my name's Robert Panahi and I'm running for VP Student Life. One of the things that I would like to do if elected as VP Student life is (???) more dating events. Almost everyone goes through the dating stage, (???) potential boyfriend or girlfriend or (???). Although we spend lots of money on educating ourselves (???) economically successful in this world, we are not taught the social skills so that we can successfully (???). Therefore I find that there's a need of more dating events, and having the experience of being president of the Dalhousie Dating Society, I find that I am the right person for the job. Also (???) matter I really want to work on is Frosh Week 2007. I want to make Frosh Week 2007 an event to remember by organizing a Fear Factor Frosh Week. All the frosh groups will go through different students (???) best frosh groups that work well together will survive to the end. Also I would like to organize a flag football tournament before the Superbowl and have different (???) come to the Grawood and T-Room. And for my cousin (???) I would like to say two words: high five.
Jordan Roberts (Senate)
(Standing outside)
Hi, my name is Jordan Roberts and I'm running for one of the Senate positions in the upcoming DSU Election. I promise if you vote for me I'll be dedicated to students and committed to the committees I'll be serving on. I'm a third year student here at Dalhousie, but I don't just take classes here. I work here, I eat here, sometimes I even sleep here (sorry Dr. Hyatt(?)). But anyways, if you vote for me on March 20th, 21st and 22nd, I promise I'll make it worth your while.
Justin LoRusso (Senate)
He doesn't have a video. I expect he'll campaign as little as he did last year.
Eric Snow (Senate)
(Standing in front of a blue background)
Hey. My name is Eric Snow, I'm a second year student here at Dalhousie University, and I want to be your Senate Rep (??) DSU. Our university community is a diverse one, both academically and in our student body. Let's help make sure that that diversity is promoted through a strong external policy, maintained against integrity issues like plagiarism, and improved through exciting new degree programs (?). To learn more about me, come check out my website at ericsnow.ca.
Christian Tschirhart (Senate)
(standing at the front of a classroom)
Hi, I'm Christian Tschirhart and I'm running for Senate. We need to assure our quality of education as well as the efficiency of our academic programs and in that process, students need to be more engaged. I will take on that role of engaging students. On March 20th to 22nd, please vote Christian Tschirhart for Senate.
Victoria Jones (Senate)
(Lying down on the infodesk in the SUB)
Hi, I'm Victoria Jones, and I'm running for Senate re-election. I'm currently the only female Senator. As such, I sit on the Senate Discipline Committee, the Senate Academic Appeals Committee, and the Senate Honourary Degree Committee. I've been there, I've done that, let's do it again. Vote for me.
Daniel Boyle (BoG)
(Walks from vending machine into elevator)
When you think of the Board of Governors, what comes to mind? (???) (Elevator dings) Nova Scotia students pay one of the highest tuitions in the country. But do you know where these fees are going? (Elevator door closes) The Dalhousie Board of Governors has control over the fees at Dalhousie. An effective voice for our needs must be heard. Having spent the last few years as a DSU Councilor, I know the issues we face. This our university, and I want to be our voice. Vote Daniel Boyle for Board of Governors Representative.
Greg Debogorski (BoG)
(Standing outside)
What's the DSU do for you? You know I've been asking that since I came here to Dalhousie and I've asked that consistently to all my colleagues. They tell me the same thing over and over again - I don't even know what the DSU is s'posed to be doin' for me. So... let's, let's start with some changes on campus. Let's... let's start fighting against the the big bad capitalists, the big bad administration here on campus, and, uh, start start ripping back some of, some of our rights. We pay for this school, we pay for the, the, the adminsitration to be here, for the, the people to clean up after us, for, you know, the food that's even here in the SUB. Let's, uh, make some changes, and let's, let's create a better Dal, um, and, not everything is, is, is, you throw money at the problem, and that's something that, that really I'd like to bring Dalhousie in total. Uh - my name's Gregory Debogorski. Vote for me, Board of Governors.
Tyler Dennis (BoG)
(In front of vending machines with random guy in the shot)
Ladies and gentlemen, it's election time again, and you know what that means, candidates walk around trying to get your vote, tryin' to (???). I wanna be a different candidate. I wanna be a voice for Dalhousie. My name is tyler dennis, and I'm running for the Board of Governors. On election day, you're gonna have a wide range of candidates to choose from. But I want to be the candidate that's gonna serve you best. I wanna make sure that all Dalhousie students have their say. The recent issue of the referendum (???) future talks (???) adminstration and the students. I feel that I can be that voice. Making sure that all students on all campuses are given a fair voice and a fair choice. So on election day, take a look at your alternatives and vote Tyler Dennis, board of governors. Thank you very much.
Shannon Zimmerman (BoG)
(Standing in the first floor of the SUB)
Tuition rates at Dalhousie are forcing students to pay two thousand dollars above the national average. It's time for us to take action. Students need to set the Board of Governors agenda and have residence rates, international differential fees, deferred maintenance, and tuition for undergraduate and professional students at the top of the agenda. Students need to come at the university as a unified force and show them that we are not willing to pay these amounts any more. By voting me as your BoG rep, I will make this my priority and I will lobby the members of the Board to pay attention to what you have to say.
David Russell (temporarily unavailable)
Tracy Voegeli (temporarily unavailable)
DalOut (Referendum Question part A)
(three people stand on second floor of the SUB)
(One speaks)
DalOut is Dal's LGBTQ society and this year's DSU B-level society of the year. (holds up what I assume is two quarters) This is 50 cents. We strive to promote a safe campus for all students at Dalhousie and to educate everyone at Dal about the issues facing the LGBTQ community. (Another speaks) This small donation from you will help to fight the conditions that promote all forms of prejudice and hate, and that benefits everyone. (All in unison) So on March 20th to 22nd, vote yes for 50 cents for DalOut.
WUSC (Referendum Question part B)
(Standing inside while music plays over her voice, holding two quarters)
With this 50 cents you can change the life of a refugee. With this 50 cents you can bring a refugee student to attend Dalhousie University. On March 20th and(?) 22nd, vote yes to World University Services Canada.
